MATERIAL CHOICES

Energy efficient window NJ

Vinyl Windows

Vinyl is a great material for window construction. It is durable, easy to produce and requires no maintenance. The best manufacturers offer lifetime warranties, something not found with a wood window. Vinyl frames are hollow and therefore can be filled with foam to offer much better thermal properties and energy savings over wood windows.  Some of our partners offer additional features such as triple pane glazing, noise reduction glass and fiberglass reinforced frames.  Tilt-wash double hungs are really great for convenience and standard on higher quality vinyl windows.  Vinyl windows have come a very long way since they were first introduced.

Fiberglass Windows

There is no argument that fiberglass is a stronger and more durable material for windows.  It holds paint well and will not expand and contract like a vinyl window.   The warranties are usually more like that of a wood window company with typical offerings of 10 or 15 years.  There’s a reason boat’s and ladders are made out of this amazing material and it is a great material for windows but when compared with vinyl it would important to factor in the budget.  We are certified by the fiberglass manufacturers we represent and will install their windows to our exacting standards.

Wood Windows

Wood windows are as popular as ever for the authentic warm look that we are used to with these windows.  The materials vary depending on the manufacturer.  Some are made from pieces of glued together pine and others are made from beautiful Douglass fir.  Most windows in our NJ climate though are going to have a cladding on the exterior of the wood window.  Usually this would be aluminum or vinyl.  In some rare cases it may be best to have the look of real wood on the exterior but it will come at a cost as far as maintenance.  We offer wood windows from several manufacturers and have partnered with them with factory training so that our installations are certified.  Expect to spend a bit more for a high quality wood window but nothing else can match it’s warmth and natural beauty.

WINDOW & DOOR INSTALLATION

Our factory trained employees will install your windows and doors with the best standardized practices known in the industry. All of our windows and doors are sealed with premium sealants to form a weather barrier against the exterior.

COMMON WINDOW STYLES

Double Hung Windows

These are the most common type of windows in Morris County and most of Northern NJ. They offer traditional colonial styling with modern conveniences like tilt-washing and grilles between the glass (gbg) for ease of cleaning. A double-hung window means that both the top and bottom sashes of the window are operational, as oppose to single-hung where the top sash is stationary. These windows come in vinyl, wood, and composites. Vinyl is the most popular choice because they are virtually maintenance free and offer Lifetime Warranties from top notch manufacturers. At TRC we are proud to offer a full line of Sunrise double hung windows which are the best in the industry. All of these windows were awarded “gold-label” status from the NFRC which means they exceeded the highest industry standards. Many times Double-Hung windows are combined (a process called mulling) into a bank of multiple windows. Often these can be replaced individually.

Taylor Rae also installs wood replacements from top manufacturers such as Pella and Andersen. If a classic look on the interior is what you are after then this may be your best choice. Often you can replace the windows in your main living areas, such as the living room and dining room, with wood windows and use vinyl elsewhere.

Casement or “Crank-Out” Windows

Many homes in Northern NJ have been built with a more modern look which includes casement windows. Casements are built with just one large sash that opens by turning a crank. They typically offer the best u-factor and air infiltration numbers because the seal is easier to maintain than other window configurations. Casements offer a less obstructed view than double-hungs and are often selected because of it. Our vinyl casement windows offer the best NFRC ratings in the industry and are backed by a full lifetime warranty. Casements are often designed as a double unit with one opening to the left and one to the right, or triples where the center is fixed.

Awning Windows

Awning windows are similar to casements in that they consist of one sash, or pane of glass, that is opened with a crank. The difference is that they swing vertically rather than horizontally. So they latch at the bottom and are hinged at the top. They are a better choice than casements for openings that are square or are wider than they are tall. Many times awning windows are configured to be mulled with a fixed window, either above or below the awning window (pictured). This is great where you need a picture window for a room with a beautiful view to the outside but would also like to be able to open the windows for some nice fresh air. Better efficiency numbers can be achieved with these windows because the seal is easier to maintain than sliders or double-hungs.

Slding Windows

Sliding windows, or sliders, are made up of two or three sashes that move horizontally to open and close. They are very practical and are generally a little less expensive than other types of windows. The seal between the windows is made with a weatherstripping at the vertical meeting rail, it’s like a double-hung but laying on it’s side. The sliders we recommend from Soft-lite are a swing-in slider. This is for ease of cleaning and is a very nice option. Also the Soft-lite windows use a brass roller instead of just relying on plastic on plastic, which tends to wear faster and not provide a smooth operating motion.

Bay and Bow Windows

Bay and bow windows are a terrific addition to any home. Whether your replacing an old, drafty and inefficient window or want to enlarge an opening to fit a new window, we can help. With offerings from top notch manufacturers and our professional installation you can rest assured that we are the best choice in Morris County for bay or bow installations. With large windows like these installation is more important than ever. The windows are cantilevered from the inside of your home using a cable support system or knee brackets and in some cases both. Either a new roof system, copper or asphalt, will be installed or the window will be tied into your existing overhangs if possible. Also it’s crucial to insulate above the window cavity to prevent a situation called ice-damming, which can lead to much bigger problems. Choosing a window that has foam filled frames and an insulated seatboard goes a long way to keeping those heating bills lower. Bays are configured with one large fixed window in the center and two smaller windows called flankers on the sides. The flankers may be double-hungs or casements. Bays are available in widths up to about 10′, beyond that a bow is the window of choice. This is because the bow window consists of equally sized panels, usually 4 or 5, that can be combined to achieve the desired width. Bow windows won’t have as deep of a ledge on the inside for your cat or dog to sit and watch the neighbors but they are great in situations where width is important or there is a restraint on projection (how far the window protrudes out from the siding of the house).
